Social Security: A Helpful Benefit, Not Your Ultimate Security
Social Security has become an important part of retirement income for millions of Americans. It's understandable to wonder when to claim benefits, how much you'll receive, and how it fits into your retirement strategy.
Those are wise financial questions.
But as Christians, there's an even more important question: Where does our true security come from?
Psalm 46:1 tells us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Government programs may provide valuable support, but they were never intended to carry the weight of our ultimate confidence.
Social Security is a tool—not a foundation.
Financial planning often includes evaluating whether to begin benefits early, delay until full retirement age, or wait even longer to maximize monthly income. The right decision depends on many factors, including health, life expectancy, marital status, income needs, and other retirement assets.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
That's why thoughtful planning is so important.
At the same time, Scripture reminds us to avoid placing our hope in uncertain things. Markets fluctuate. Laws change. Benefits may be adjusted. Economic conditions shift. Yet Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
When we recognize that every financial resource is a gift from God, we begin making decisions with greater peace rather than fear.
As a Christian financial advisor, I encourage clients to think of Social Security as one piece of a larger stewardship plan that may also include savings, retirement accounts, investments, pensions, and wise spending habits.
Most importantly, remember that financial confidence isn't built solely by maximizing benefits. It's built by trusting the God who faithfully provides.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Plan wisely.
Use every available resource responsibly.
But let your greatest confidence rest in the One who owns "the cattle on a thousand hills" (Psalm 50:10).
That's the kind of security that never runs out.
