The Eternal ROI: Investing in the Kingdom of God First

In the world of finance, ROI—Return on Investment—is everything. We weigh every opportunity by what we’ll get back: more money, more influence, more security. But Jesus flips the script. In the Sermon on the Mount, He offers a radical investment strategy that challenges our assumptions about wealth, success, and what really lasts.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19–21

Jesus isn’t against wealth—He’s against short-sighted investments. He’s inviting us to pursue an eternal return by investing in something far greater than earthly gain: the Kingdom of God.

What Is the Eternal ROI?

Eternal ROI means shifting your focus from temporary returns to lasting impact. It’s recognizing that:

·         Earthly riches fade. (Cars rust, tech becomes obsolete, markets crash.)

·         Kingdom investments compound forever. (Souls saved, lives changed, love shown.)

Jesus doesn’t say don’t store up treasure. He says store it up in the right place—in heaven, where it can’t be lost, stolen, or destroyed.

The best part? When we invest in the Kingdom, we don’t just change the world—we change ourselves. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Our giving shapes our affections. The more we give toward God’s purposes, the more our hearts are aligned with His.

How Do We Invest in the Kingdom?

1.      Give Generously

a.      Support ministries, missionaries, churches, and nonprofits doing gospel work.

b.     Your money becomes a tool for eternity when it's used to bring people to Christ and meet real needs.

2.      Serve Faithfully

a.      Time is a currency. Volunteer in your church, disciple a younger believer, serve your community.

b.     The smallest act of service can have eternal significance.

3.      Live Missionally

a.      See your job, home, and relationships as platforms for the gospel.

b.     Every conversation, act of kindness, and decision can plant seeds for the Kingdom.

4.      Pray Boldly

a.      Prayer isn’t passive. It’s a powerful investment in God’s work.

b.     Praying for others, for the Church, and for the lost aligns our will with God’s and invites His power into their lives.

The Risk of Earthly Investments Alone

Jesus’ warning in Matthew 6 is sobering. Earthly treasures are vulnerable: subject to decay, destruction, and disappointment. The pursuit of wealth for its own sake leads to stress, greed, and spiritual blindness.

We’ve all seen people with full accounts and empty lives. The temporary nature of this world means any investment without eternity in mind is ultimately insecure.

Living for the Long View

Jesus doesn’t ask us to abandon wisdom—He asks us to apply it eternally. What if we measured success by:

·         Souls impacted rather than followers gained?

·         Needs met rather than numbers in a portfolio?

·         Obedience to God rather than approval from the world?

The world says, “Invest in what makes you rich.”
Jesus says, “Invest in what makes you righteous.”

Final Thought: The Treasure Test

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Matthew 6:21

Where we put our time, money, and energy reveals what we truly value. So ask yourself:
What am I really investing in?
Is it eternal, or is it temporary?

The eternal ROI—the Kingdom of God—is the only investment guaranteed never to fail. It pays dividends in lives transformed, faith deepened, and joy multiplied. And best of all, it pleases the heart of the One who gave everything for us.

So give generously. Live purposefully. Invest eternally.
