Retire, Downsize & Hit the Road: Part 1 – The New American Dream

Retirement is changing in America. For decades, the common picture was predictable: a cozy home, a quiet neighborhood, and a routine that seldom shifted. But over the last few years, something new has been happening—something exciting, liberating, and deeply personal for many retirees. They're selling homes, downsizing, and choosing to spend part or all of their retirement exploring the open road in an RV.

And this isn’t a fringe movement. The RV Industry Association estimates that more than 1.7 million people now live full-time in RVs, and millions more—like myself—RV part-time while keeping a

stick-and-brick home base. The appeal is clear: freedom without giving up stability, exploration without losing your roots.

For many, the idea starts quietly. Maybe it’s a road trip that leaves you feeling energized. Maybe you realize that the rooms in your house stay empty more than they’re used. Or maybe—like what I experienced—the first time you take your RV out and sip your morning coffee while overlooking a lake or a mountain ridge, you realize how much beauty there is right here in our own country.

There’s something about RV life that reconnects people with a sense of adventure they haven’t felt since childhood. You get to choose where you wake up. You get to chase warmer weather, scenic drives, or peaceful campgrounds filled with tall pines and fresh air. With 423 national park sites and thousands of state parks, county parks, and Corps of Engineer campgrounds, the United States offers nearly endless opportunities for exploration.

But RV life also brings something deeper: simplicity. When you step into a campground, you notice something—you slow down. Conversations with neighbors come easy. You watch the sky more. You sit outside more. You feel more connected to nature and to the people around you. For many, this lifestyle becomes a way to refresh their perspective on retirement altogether.

If you're beginning to picture yourself exploring the country by RV—whether part-time or full-time—I'd be glad to help you map out how it can fit into your retirement plan. I travel by RV myself (while keeping my home base), so I understand both the joys and the practical realities of this lifestyle.
