Retire, Downsize & Hit the Road: Part 3 – Your Home on Wheels

Choosing your RV is the moment when the dream becomes tangible. Every RV has its own personality, and finding the right one is a little like finding a home with wheels.

When I walk into an RV—whether it’s a fifth wheel like mine or a compact Class C—I picture real life inside it. Can I imagine waking up here? Can I picture cooking breakfast? Is there space for my gear, my everyday comforts, my work, or even a grandchild visiting for a weekend?

According to RVIA data, 55% of full-time RV retirees prefer towable RVs, especially fifth wheels, because they offer taller ceilings, larger kitchens, and a more residential feel. Motorhomes remain popular for those who prefer simplicity and quicker travel days.

Downsizing can also be one of the most emotional parts of the transition. UCLA studies show that the average American household contains over 300,000 items. When you downsize to an RV, you learn something profound: you don’t need as much as you thought. What remains are the things that support your lifestyle, not weigh it down.

Preparing for full-time or part-time travel involves: - A mail-forwarding solution or simple home forwarding - Reliable internet (Starlink is becoming the top choice) - Basic maintenance knowledge - A travel strategy based on seasons and comfort level
