Leaving More Than an Inheritance

Many people think about retirement in terms of what they'll leave behind financially.

While leaving an inheritance can certainly be a blessing, Scripture reminds us that our greatest legacy extends far beyond money.

Proverbs 13:22 says, "A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children."

That inheritance certainly may include financial assets, but it should also include wisdom, faith, integrity, generosity, and a lifelong example of trusting God.

One of the beautiful opportunities retirement provides is time.

Time to invest in grandchildren.

Time to mentor younger believers.

Time to serve the church.

Time to volunteer.

Time to disciple others.

These investments often produce eternal returns that no financial portfolio can match.

As a Christian financial advisor, I encourage families to think carefully about estate planning, beneficiary designations, charitable giving, and tax-efficient wealth transfer. These are important components of responsible stewardship.

But we also encourage conversations that are far more valuable than financial documents.

Tell your family your testimony.

Share how God provided during difficult seasons.

Explain why generosity matters.

Teach biblical principles about work, contentment, and stewardship.

Your children and grandchildren may someday spend the money you leave behind.

But the faith you model can shape generations.

Retirement gives us a unique opportunity to intentionally build that legacy.

When your life is complete, people may remember your career for a few years.

They may remember your financial success for a little longer.

But a life lived faithfully for Christ can influence eternity.

May we all strive to leave an inheritance that cannot be measured merely in dollars, but in lives transformed by the grace of God and the example of faithful stewardship.

One of the greatest gifts you can leave your loved ones is a well-prepared financial and legacy plan. At Otium Financial Planners, we work alongside our clients to develop retirement, estate, and legacy strategies that reflect their faith, priorities, and desire to care well for future generations.
