The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC):
How to Read Your Medicare Mail
If you have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, you will receive an Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC, from your current plan each fall.
The ANOC explains changes to your coverage that will take effect in January. While it may look like another insurance document, it contains important information that can affect your healthcare costs and coverage.
What Should You Look For?
When reviewing your ANOC, pay attention to changes in:
- Premiums: Will your monthly premium increase?
- Deductibles and copayments: Are you going to pay more for medical services or prescriptions?
- Prescription coverage: Are your medications still covered, and have their costs or coverage tiers changed?
- Doctors and hospitals: If you have Medicare Advantage, are your preferred providers still in the plan's network?
- Additional benefits: Have dental, vision, hearing, fitness, or other supplemental benefits changed?
- Out-of-pocket costs: Has your maximum out-of-pocket amount changed?
Do not focus solely on the monthly premium. A plan with a $0 premium can still have significant out-of-pocket costs.
Why Review Your Coverage Every Year?
Your Medicare plan can change from year to year. Your medications, doctors, healthcare needs, and budget can change as well.
A plan that was a good fit this year may not be the best option for you next year.
The ANOC explains changes to your current plan, but it does not tell you whether another plan may better meet your needs.
How Otium Financial Planners Can Help
At Otium Financial Planners, we can help you review your ANOC and understand how changes to your current plan may affect you.
We can review your:
- Prescription medications
- Doctors and healthcare providers
- Preferred hospitals and pharmacies
- Premiums and out-of-pocket costs
- Deductibles and copayments
- Provider networks
- Prescription drug coverage
- Available Medicare plan options
Sometimes, the best decision is to remain with your current plan. In other situations, changes may make it worthwhile to explore other options.
Do not assume your current plan is still the right plan simply because it worked well in the past.
